Skills & Brooklyn

According to the late master furniture designer, George Nakashima,
“skills are maybe the are the finest resources any nation
can have, and we don’t have that in this country and that’s why
things are getting so bad. This country prides itself on automobiles
and can’t even make a decent automobile, a sad situation.
Whereas if one has skills, one could make the slums bloom
with no money at all, simply by work and skills.”

One of the admirable qualities of the Brooklyn furniture scene is the use of skills. The artisanal quality of this work that can be seen in many of the pieces being sold throughout Williamsburg at places like The Future Perfect. One place where these skills can be learned is Bushwick’s
3rd Ward. Classes are offered there in subjects ranging from welding to furniture design to screen printing.
