As a design editor, I see an ongoing parade of mass-produced furniture, so it’s sometimes easy to forget Modernism’s long craft history. Sure, Charles and Ray Eames performed furniture miracles with bent plywood and fiberglass, and those kinds of material experiments live on in contemporary feats like Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec’s Slow Chair. To me, minimalism is uniquely lovely when it bears the fingerprint of the human hand — think of Hans Wegner and George Nakashima, whose poetic ways with wood helped mainstream the movement. Another of my favorite Modern traditions is the clever repurposing of materials: no one did it better than Achille Castiglioni, who made an art of using off-the-shelf industrial parts to fashion his unforgettable product designs. Happily, there are plenty of examples of the handcrafted and the reinvented on Etsy — my digging even turned up a few pieces by the masters themselves! Click here to visit article.

Friendly situation, not a jam-packed crazy deal at all. Equipped with all major floor tools (power saw, band saw, mortiser etc.) you need to have your own hand tools (chisels, router). Shop is a well kept space and is relatively orderly.

Looking for a creative someone (boy or girl) to get along with furniture maker (lease holder) who will be in shop approximately half time and a couple folks who use shop sporadically on nights and weekends.
Saturday marked the official opening of the High Line, the 10th anniversary of Friends of the High Line, and the 75th anniversary of the building of the original structure. To celebrate, The High Line Street Festival brought together local artists, marching bands and other events for all ages. Of particular interest was Jason Hackenwerth and his Mega Might Army. Brooklyn Modern spoke to Hackenwerth at the festival to learn more about his work.

“I was given a grant by the Scope Art Fair to go to the Venice Biennale in 2005, so when I went there I wanted to take something uniquely New York. So I made big bed bugs out of balloons and I went around terrorizing and pestering every body at the Venice Biennale as a bed bug.”

Hackenwerths’s balloon sculptures fit over the wearer and allow them to become the character of the balloon animal. Outdoor events like the High Line Festival allow the wearers to explore the performative aspect of the work. All his pieces have different names and behaviors, the first being the Mega Might. At an event like this a piece might last the weekend, but in a gallery they can last significantly longer.

Hackenwerth admits that having attractive people to perform in them helps to get people interested in looking at the work, but sees that as part of the process.
