photoPanel Discussion:
“Does integrity of design change in a down economy: Does high end meet low cost?”

At Bklny Designs’ trade luncheon the panel talked about how the recession is affecting the design world. There are many opinions. Eric Manigian, a veteran Brooklyn designer, believes this is the time to live with less but with better quality. The panel moderator thinks designers need to hold out and stay true to the quality that got you noticed. However, Dave Alhadeff, owner of The Future Perfect, has had to be flexible and adjust his retail operation. Some of these measures have been 20% off sales and coming up with new products with lower price points. Mark Goetz and Tim Richartz, who are both furniture designers and educators at Pratt, point out that their students are adapting and designing not for now, but for a brighter point the economy. This is, indeed, a tough time for all design purists and afficionados, but all obstacles lead to new ideas and visions, as the panel points out.
