Platform 21 is a socially conscious design firm in Amsterdam that has come out with The Repair Manifesto.  The  document’s first point says “Make your products live longer! Repairing means taking the opportunity to give your product a second life. Don’t ditch it, stitch it! Don’t end it, mend it! Repairing is not anti-consumption. It is anti-needlessly throwing things away.” I think this is good stuff. In Greenpoint alone, on garbage night, there are tons of slightly damaged pieces of furniture on the street. Most are not great looking, but there are always a few gems. Currently, I’m in the process of adding three legs from a 1950’s coffee table to a slab of walnut to make a stool. At any rate, if you’re interested in repair projects, visit Platform 21. They’ve got some interesting ideas and appear to be a design firm with very broad abilities.
